Sunflower Plates With Purpose
The Sunflower design, donated by artist Cassandra Ott, benefits POWER - strong, resilient and beautiful women on a journey to a better life for themselves and those they love.
The sunflower represents the strength, resilience, and beauty shared by all women. Legend tells us that as pioneers journeyed westward, the women scattered sunflower seeds which grew against all odds into beautiful flowers, guiding other brave women and men traveling west in search of a better life for their families.

While glass is thought to be a notoriously fragile material, these pieces are more resilient than assumed. Thanks to the thick 3/16” glass used in the majority of these collections and the aptly named “Double Strength” glass that is used for the Plates With Purpose™. High kiln temperatures and the gradual cooling process anneal and stabilize these plates and make them ready to find their place in the world.
Proceeds from this Sunflower Plate With Purpose™ benefit POWER - Developing Women leaders and high-potential talent to interact and exchange ideas with thought leaders, industry experts, and their peers. Since its inception in 2004, POWER has garnered support from Fortune 500 multinational corporations, international law firms, and civic organizations. More than 8,000 women and men have participated in POWER programs in Europe, Asia, and the United States. They convene economists, sociologists, and corporate leaders – women and men – from across the globe to discuss the new business imperative: inclusivity. Global economic recovery depends on women entering and contributing to the workforce. Women and men working together will create inclusive environments that spur creativity, innovation, and leadership.
These designs are made from post-industrial/pre-consumer recycled glass, not from post-consumer bottles or materials that populate our recycling bins at home. They recycle their own own scraps after cutting a shape and add them to other industrial scraps that come from partner businesses. These bits and pieces are used to create new sheets of glass that will become additional plates.
The best thing about glass is that it’s endlessly recyclable. They believe in leaving our planet better than they found it. That’s why they try and reuse as much as possible to minimize their impact while we are on it. Recycling what they can and only making as much as they need. Small businesses can do great things!
